John Ewing didn’t grow up planning to be an investor. The interest arrived late in university, a light bulb moment he calls it, and once it switched on, he knew that was the hill he wanted to climb. He’s been climbing it ever since.
As Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer, John leads Ewing Morris’s investment process. His particular focus is the kind of company most investors overlook: smaller businesses, often founder-led, operating in corners of the market where careful research still produces an edge. Getting to sit across from those founders and learning how they built something, how it works, what they see that others don’t, is by his own account the best part of the job.
The work ethic that drives it is almost old-fashioned in the best way. John walks to work. He meditates. He does his sharpest reading, writing and thinking in the early morning hours before the day begins. And the books: a mentor once set him the goal of reading a book a week for a year. John took it seriously. That was nearly 20 years ago. He hasn’t stopped.
That same disposition, patient, curious, committed to understanding things deeply, runs straight through how Ewing Morris invests.
